First School

Foundation Stage

In the Foundation Stage Unit, children have the opportunity to learn through play and practical activities, with free-flow access to four distinct areas. These areas include two working classrooms, an outdoor area and a creative area.

We follow the Early Years Statutory Framework, published in March 2014 by the DfES. This Framework specifies the requirement for learning and development in the Early Years and provides specific areas of learning we must cover in our curriculum. These areas are:

  1. Personal, Social and Emotional Development

  2. Physical Development

  3. Communication and Language development

  4. Literacy

  5. Mathematics

  6. Understanding the World

  7. Expressive Arts and Design

It is a play-based curriculum, following a child-initiated structure, where the children learn through direct experience, investigation, exploration and play. As part of the journey through Foundation, children will be learning through topics including; Ourselves, Autumn, Festivals and Celebrations and Food and Growing.

Key Stage 1 and Lower Key Stage 2

Here at Kings Priory First School, we pride ourselves on our wide and varied curriculum.

  • Our aim is to ensure our pupils are experiencing a breadth and depth of provision which celebrates all abilities.
  • The First School follows National Curriculum guidance and subsequently, our pupils receive a full and enriching experience right through from Reception to Year 4.
  • Pupils are supported to meet and exceed age-related expectations through a range of means these include a Mastery Maths approach to our mathematics delivery, schemes and programmes such as Talk for Writing and Penpals.
  • Pupils from Reception to Year 4 follow the Read Write Ink programme for phonics, handwriting and spelling.

Parent Guide

This Dfe guidance is intended to support education providers and/or parents of primary school children.

It would be impossible to set out in detail everything your child would learn during their six years of statutory primary education, but by providing the DfE outline of typical content and some background information about how the curriculum and assessment works, hopefully, it will help parents support their children in making the most of their education.

Delivery of the Curriculum

In Year 1-4 we follow a thematic approach to our curriculum. It is led by big questions which allow the pupils to explore the topics. The curriculum in the First School is preparatory for that in the Middle School. We have Forest School in KS1 to expand outdoor learning up from Reception and act as a transitional subject. All year groups make regular visits to the local area to expand and develop learning around their chosen topic.

The current subjects on our curriculum map are as follows for Year 1-4:
