Assessment in Reception

Assessment in Reception

Assessment in Reception is gentle, purposeful and always focused on the whole child.

There are two types of assessment:

Statutory assessments
These are required nationally and help give a broad picture of children’s development:

  • Reception Baseline Assessment (on entry)
  • End of Reception assessment (EYFS Profile)

Teacher assessment (ongoing)
Alongside this, staff continually assess children through:

  • Observing children as they learn and play
  • Talking with children about their ideas and thinking
  • Using their professional knowledge of each child

This ongoing assessment helps us understand children’s strengths, interests and next steps, so we can plan learning that supports and challenges them — without pressure or formal testing.
