Transition Process
The transition from Primary to Secondary school is a significant step, and at Kings Priory School, we ensure this process is a seamless, positive experience that builds confidence from the very first day. Our transition programme is designed to bridge the gap between Key Stage 2 and Key Stage 3, ensuring academic continuity and robust pastoral care.
The Transition Roadmap
Our transition process is a "journey, not an event," beginning long before the September start date:
The Welcome and Information Phase
Once a place is confirmed, we open the lines of communication with families to begin building our partnership:
- Transition Information: All information is made readily available to parents and pupils, outlining everything from uniform requirements (via Emblematic) to the "day in the life" of a Year 7 students.
- Data Collection: We work closely with our own Middle School and external feeder primary schools to gather academic and pastoral data. This ensures that the "thread of support" for pupils with SEND or Young Carer responsibilities is maintained without interruption.
Primary Liaison and Visits
Our Head of Year 7 and SEND team visit pupils' current primary settings. We discuss each child's individual needs and learning styles, ensuring our teaching remains age-appropriate and consistent from day one.
Transition Days: "The Kings Priory Experience"
In the summer term, all prospective Year 7 pupils are invited to the Huntington Place site for a series of induction days:
- Taster Lessons: Pupils experience the breadth of our ambitious curriculum, from Science labs to Creative Arts.
- Finding Their Way: Students spend time navigating the site, locating their Safe Spaces, and visiting the key areas of the school.
- Meeting the Tutor: Small group sessions with their new Form Tutor help build the foundations of Respect, Tolerance, and Friendship within their new peer groups.
Induction and Beyond
The support doesn't end when the school year begins. The first week of September features a staggered start or dedicated induction period focusing on:
The "Home from Home" Environment: Helping students settle into their new routines and understand our high behaviour expectations.
Year 7 Parent Information Evening: An early opportunity for parents to meet the Senior leadership team and the EDI Working Group, ensuring families feel part of our global citizen mission.
Peer Mentoring: Older students act as "buddies" to help Year 7s navigate lunchtimes and social spaces with confidence.
Key Contacts for Transition
If you have specific questions regarding the transition process, please contact our Year 7 Phase Lead or our Inclusion/SEND team. We are here to ensure that every student's transition is as unique as they are.
